In Joshua 12
● notice that this is a chapter of “taking names,” of the cataloging and the enumerating of the conquered ones, those overcome by the “people of Israel” (1, 6, 7)
● see that the numbering is organized by location and by leader: east of the Jordan the people of Israel conquered under Moses and west of the river under Joshua,
● remember how Joshua explained to the Reubenites, the Gadiites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh that their “men of valor” (1:13-15) were to cross the river with the rest, to help their kinsmen, and then return to “possess” their land east of the river,
● notice the naming of places, too, the cataloging of possessions in the regions (8) of the land promised to Abraham,
● reckon with the orderliness implied in the land being given “according to their allotments” (7), and
● notice that the cities where some “Anakim” (11:22) remain- Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod- are not named in this chapter.
